5 Ways to Beat the Heat in Erie

It’s going to be a scorcher in Erie this week, with the forecast calling for temps in the 90s through the weekend. Here are five good ways to beat the heat in the Erie area:

beach

1. Go jump in the lake.

Presque Isle State Park is home to seven miles of sandy beaches. Swimming is only permitted at guarded beaches. There is a sign shortly after the entrance to the park that gives you an update on which beaches are open. In general, though, you can usually count on Beaches 1, 6, 8, 10 and 11 being open.

Insider tip: Beach 11 is great for kids as it’s very shallow.

Insider tip #2: Dogs are not permitted past the tree line on any guarded beach. If you want to let your dog swim, find an unguarded area along the shore or go to the bayside. Note that people can’t swim at any unguarded beach, but you can wade (up to your knees).

2. Rent a watercraft.

At Presque Isle Canoe and Boat Livery, you can rent kayaks, canoes, standup paddleboards, and more. Want something with a little more horsepower? Try Port Erie Sports on the bayfront where you can rent motorboats, jet skis, and pontoon boats.

3. Go Play at Perry Square fountain.

Cool your heels at the Perry Square fountain in the center of downtown Erie. The fountain, which was constructed in 1929, is meant for water play. It is located on the east side of the square, but you should have no trouble finding it, just follow the sound of kids’ shrieks and happy laughter.

4. Hit the splash pad.

Another place you’ll find lots of kids laughing, is the Bay View Park Splash Pad, which is open from noon to 8 p.m. every day, weather permitting.  Bay View Park, at West Second and Walnut Streets, is just west of State street on the bluffs, overlooking the bay.  The park also offers a playground, grills, picnic tables, giant swings, and the iconic Erie sign.

5. Get Wet at Water World.

Waldameer and Water World, at the entrance to Presque Isle, offer a day full of fun for “kids” of any age. While anyone can walk around for free in Waldameer (the amusement park portion), you must purchase admission to enter the water park. On a week like this, it’s definitely worth the price to enjoy the giant wave pool, kids play area, the lazy river, and a dozen (or more) water slides.
